What is IB?
The International Baccalaureate (IB), headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, is a non-profit, independent international educational organization founded in 1968.
The IB's fundamental aim is to contribute to building a more peaceful and sustainable world by fostering individuals who are culturally aware, inquisitive, compassionate, and open to lifelong learning.
The IB adopts a learning approach that focuses not only on imparting knowledge, but also on promoting students' character development, social responsibility awareness, and global citizenship competencies. Within this approach, IB schools combine local curricula with international standards, offering students the opportunity to learn about and understand both their own cultures and world cultures.
The International Baccalaureate approaches the learning process holistically, considering not only academic achievement but also the student's personal, social, emotional, and ethical development. Developed in line with this approach, the IB Learner Profile is at the heart of all programs and aims to nurture students to become inquirers, knowledgeable, principled, open-minded, communicators, caring, balanced, courageous, and reflective individuals.
What are IB Programs?
The IB has developed four main programs for worldwide implementation. These programs cover the educational process from age 3 to 19 and each incorporates pedagogical structures appropriate to their respective developmental levels:
1. PYP – Primary Years Programme
This program, designed for students aged 3-12, aims to help students learn how to learn, think critically, and develop global awareness. Learning is structured around interdisciplinary themes, and students learn to connect with the world by making sense of information.
2. MYP – Middle Years Programme
This program, designed for students aged 11-16, develops students' critical thinking, research, and self-expression skills. The MYP has a flexible structure that is both compatible with the local curriculum and supports interdisciplinary learning.
3. DP – Diploma Programme
This program, designed to prepare students aged 16-19 for university, offers a comprehensive curriculum with high academic standards and international recognition. Students develop in a multifaceted way, gaining in-depth academic knowledge as well as the components of Theory of Knowledge (TOK), Creativity–Activity–Service (CAS), and Extended Essay (EE).
4. CP – Career-related Programme (Kariyer Odaklı Program)
Another program for students aged 16-19, CP supports students' orientation toward specific career fields while also ensuring their continued academic development. This program combines interdisciplinary learning, ethical thinking, and application-oriented work.
IB's Contributions to Education
IB programs are currently offered in over 150 countries worldwide, in more than 5,000 schools.
The common goal of the programs is to cultivate individuals who possess academic excellence alongside moral values, developed social awareness, and a commitment to lifelong learning, and to equip them to navigate the complex world of the 21st century.
